Unit 8 Changes In The Environment

8.1 slow environmental changes
Some slow environmental changes:
-        
-   - Soil erosion: the loss of the top layer of soil overtime.
-   - Global warming: the rise in temperature on the earth.
-   - Weathering: the breakdown of stones, rocks, and minerals over time.
-   - Depletion of ozone layer: the ozone layer slowly become thinner due to the result of Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). CFCs gas produce by air-conditioner, refrigerators, Styrofoam packaging, aerosol sprays.

Causes of slow environmental changes
- Deforestation: clearing trees by cutting or burning
- Burning fuels: when fuels are burnt, carbon dioxide and other harmful gases are released to the air.

8.2 Rapid environmental changes

Some examples of rapid environmental changes:
Landslide: movement of mass of rock or earth down a slope.
Volcanic eruption: during volcanic eruption, magma flows out of the earth’s surface.
Tsunamis: huge waves that travel across the ocean and become larger as they approach the coast.
Earth quake: the shaking of the ground due to the sudden movement of the earth’s crust.

8.3 Good Environmental Changes
Good Environmental Changes: activity that preserve natural resources.

Some Good Environmental Changes
- Selective planting: growing plant such as tree and shrub in certain areas to reduce soil erosion.
- Cover crops: used for protecting and restoring soil fertility. Many cover crops are legumes that can change nitrogen in air into nutrient in the soil.
Deindustrialization: removal or reduction of industrial activities in area.
Volcanic eruption: heat released from volcano is used to generate electricity.

8.4 Bad Environmental Changes
Bad Environmental Changes: cause damage to wild life, changes to the climate or loss of lives and property. Some Bad Environmental Changes:
Global warming: melt the icebergs in the north and South Pole, changes the world weather pattern.
Deforestation: animals lose their habitat, source of food. Lead to soil erosion.
Some rapid environmental changes such as earth quake and tsunami can cause great loss and damage to property.

UNIT 9 ECOSYSTEM 9.1 ECOSYSTEM Ecosystem are all the organisms living together in an area and their interaction with one another as well as their environment. An organism habitat are made up of A biotic (non-living) and B iotic (living) factors. Some A biotic factors are l ight, temperature and air. Sunlight is used by plant to make photosynthesis. The temperature of a habitat determine s the kinds of organisms living there. Plants and animals need oxygen for respiration all the time. Some B iotic factors are man and other animals, plants, bacteria and fungi. Human beings may change the environment through air, land, and water pollution.
