UNIT 7 OUR ENVIRONMENT
UNIT 7 OUR ENVIRONMENT
7.1
OUR ENVIRONMENT
Our environment made up of living things
and non-living thing that affect our lives.
Living thing include plants and animals
Non-living things include light, air,
water, and soil.
7.2
RESOURCES FROM ENVIRONMENT
Renewable
Resources
Renewable resources: can be replaced
naturally by the environment or man. Some renewable resources are air, soil,
and water.
-
Air
Needed for respiration
Oxygen in the air convert
food into energy.
In an aquatic habitat, air
is dissolved in water.
-
Soil
Soil is formed from the
topmost layer in the earth
It contain water, air, and
minerals.
Anchors the root of plants
to the ground.
Get fertile from animal
waste.
-
Water
Living thing need water to
survive.
Many aquatic animals live
in ponds, lakes, seas, and oceans.
Mineral in dissolved water
help plants grow well.
b.
Other resources
-
Food
Herbivores are animals who eat plant. Carnivores
eat meat. Omnivores eat both plant
and meat.
Predator hunt and feed other animal. Prey
is the animal haunted by predator.
-
Fuels
Fuels such as wood burned to
produce heat and energy.
Fossil
fuels such as coal,
oil, and, natural gas, formed from dead organism buried under layers of
earth for thousand years. Coal burned in power stations to produce electricity.
Oil and gas is pumped from the ground. Oil refineries is used to processed oil
into petrol, diesel, and fuel for aero planes.
-
Building materials
Some of building material are wood, metals, clay, sand, and mud. Wood
is used to build house and furniture. Metal such aluminum is extracted from the
rocks. Alloy is a stronger substance made from the mix of pure metal and other
metal or non-metal.
Mountains, oceans, and rain forest are
example of natural environment that has aesthetic values. People visit natural
environment to take in their beauty or enjoy interaction with nature.

DIFFERENT TYPE OF ENVIRONMENT
Environment
Organism
Description
Body of water (ponds, rivers, ocean)
- Aquatic animals
Take oxygen dissolved in water
Land
- Land animal
Take gaseous oxygen from the air
Abundant sunlight
- Plants
- animals
- Need sunlight to make food.
- keep their body warm
Dark places
- Bats
- woodlice
- stay in cave during the day, take food at night
- Sensitive to light, found under rotting leaves and dead tree bark.
Desert
- camel
- needle grass
- High temperatures, very little rainfall.
- can drink more than 100 liters water
- has long root to reach deep underground water
North and south pole
- polar bears
- seals
- cold all year round
- have a thick layer of hair or fur.
- a layer of fat keep them warm
